On Friday, September 16, 2016, Bright Star Elementary School celebrated Constitution Day. As a school, we held two Constitutional Conventions: one for grades kindergarten through second and one for third thorough fifth grade. Each class held classroom elections to arrive at two delegates who would represent their entire class at the Constitutional Convention. At the conventions, students were introduced to the Constitution. Four historical visitors addressed the students: George Washington, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and Benjamin Franklin. These historical figures were portrayed by fourth graders Oscar Serna, Charlie White, Alexander Siguenza, and Emanuel Logan, who were dressed in time period costumes. Fourth graders Aishwarya Achari, Eden Yeager, and Joshua Soluade provided technical support. Mrs. Cameron Sheldon, the Social Studies Representative for the school and the host of the convention, with the aid of Mrs. Pamela Huey, guided the students through an authentic learning experience regarding our Constitution. The delegates brainstormed six rules that were added to our school-wide Constitution, which supports Bright Star Elementary School's Comets Rules and Expectations. The Comets Rules are: Communicate appropriately, Obey authority, Make good choices, Encourage others, Try our best, and Show respect.
